It is the assumption of the many that the rich are greedy and selfish. However, the life of Dick DeVos is one of a different approach. He believes in giving back to the community. In a report that was released in 2015, Dick and his wife Betsy DeVos have contributed approximately $139 million in their lifetime.
Betsy revealed this information following her nomination as the Education Secretary. Her donations are being scrutinized, and she opted to make her contributions known.
Dick and Betsy are passionate about the education department, and that is why they donated $3 million towards the education department in 2015. This was 26% of the total donations they made in 2015. They say that their donations towards the education sector are meant to improve the education standards.
Most of their donations are made via their foundation Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. They have also established a scholarship that supports the students from developing nations.
Their philanthropy projects are not something out of the ordinary considering that they come from family dynasties known for their giving. The DeVos family has contributed $1.33 billion in their lifetime.

Dick DeVos is a businessman and a philanthropist. He came into limelight for his great work with the Amway Company. He joined the corporation in 1974 and was in charge of research, development marketing, sales and manufacturing in the company.
Ten years in the company and he was promoted to the position of the Vice President. He was in charge of operations of the company in 18 countries.
For a brief period, he worked for the Orlando Magic. This was after his family bought the basketball franchise in 1991. He later resigned from the company and rejoined the Amway as its president in 1993. Dick was responsible for the company operations in all the countries. Under his management, the company grew to $4.5 billion in returns
In 2002, he left the company and joined the Windquest group. This is a group that is privately owned investment firm that has holdings in manufacturing and technology.
In 2005, he became a part owner of the Orlando Magic. This is after his father split the ownership among his children.
Dick has been involved in different community projects. He started by launching an education fund which rewards 4,000 scholarships to children from underprivileged families in Michigan. He also founded the West Michigan Aviation Academy which provides an education program that focuses on aviation.
He is an author, and he published the ‘Rediscovering American Values‘ in 1997. The book has been published in other seven languages.
In 2006, he ran for the gubernatorial race in Michigan. Although he lost, he is still considered one of the wealthiest men to ever enter a political race in Michigan.
