The list for this man and his trespasses against the public could go on forever. The problem is that recently there was a chance for Joe Arpaio to pay back some of the debt that he has incurred against society in the form of a prison sentence. Instead of serving that sentence, however, Joe Arpaio was the recipient of a well-timed presidential pardon that prevented him from having to serve a single day in jail. This caused quite an uproar and many people are still reeling from the decision.
Two people that are not at all surprised by this controversial verdict are Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are the founders of the Phoenix New Times. They reported heavily on Joe Arpaio the intakes while in office and are well aware of the man’s ability to get out of trouble.
As previously stated, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were arrested by Joe Arpaio in 2007 for printing information in their newspaper. It appeared as though Joe Arpaio did not appreciate the fact that Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey posted information in their newspaper about a subpoena that he issued for their offices. The subpoena was extremely broad and did not have a decided scope.
This led Larkin and Lacey to believe that it was issued with the sole intent of rifling through their files. They posted information about the sketchy subpoena and that ended in them spending 20+ days in jail. When they got out they sued the Maricopa County Police Department for $3.75 million and won. The money was immediately used to set up a fund to help members of the population who had also suffered at the hands of Joe Arpaio, migrants.
As stated previously migrants were a huge target of Joe Arpaio. He felt as though it was his duty to increase deportation in Arizona. He wanted to do that by stopping people and accosting people who he believed to be of illegal immigrant status. This resulted in a class-action lawsuit which Joe Arpaio lost. Unfortunately, he did not keep the terms of the settlement and he ended up in contempt of court. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase and Michael Lacey | Crunchbase
